A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN
BECKA
Hand in hand with Glenn, Becka jogged toward the muddy staging area at the edge of the <Sandsea Cup> grounds. Sadly, she was among the last of the would-be âmaze runnersâ to arrive. She had hoped to have time to evaluate the maze sheâd be running from the staging area before stepping into it, but showing up just before the start had been unavoidable.
Glennâs latest duel (which sheâd taken pride in watching him win) had been scheduled shortly before she was supposed to report for the qualifying round of the Luminous Maze. While Glenn had defeated his opponent, a young level 13 Skirmisher, handily and efficiently, the Luminous Maze was built on the far side of the grounds from the dueling fields. As they jogged over after Glenn won his duel, Becka had worried she would be late.
Now, as she and Glenn slowed at the edge of the crowd, Becka saw she had been foolish to be worried. A crowd of maze runners had already gathered, chatting in small groups, but their early arrival offered no benefit. Ahead, an open field sat with long fences on two sides.
There were no trees in that huge field. There were no ditches one would have to traverse to proceed. While the field did have some gentle hills, traveling up and down those would be less taxing than climbing the slopes of the Dewdrop Hills back in Grassea.
The so-called âLuminous Mazeâ was nothing more than an empty field about half the size of Wolfpine. The only features other than the fences and grass were a few bobbing and swaying wildflowers of various colors, red and purple and white. At the far end of the field from Beckaâs current position stood a line of silk ribbons held up by posts.
This couldnât be all there was to it. The Luminous Maze was not a foot race... or was it? Anna had been very clear that participants had to traverse difficult terrain, solve complex problems, and both move and think on their feet to successfully traverse the maze.
As Becka looked around at those gathered to complete the first round of the maze (there would be two rounds in total) she felt her confidence flag. Given the popularity of the dueling and Monster fighting brackets, sheâd hoped for less competition in the Luminous Maze. Yet there easily had to be over a hundred adventurers here, possibly even two hundred.
Becka had learned through gossip in the common room of the Dancing Skitterer that there would be four runnings of the first leg of the Luminous Maze today, organized by last name. Once again, the alphabet had betrayed her by placing her in the first group to run.
Other 10-15 Adventurers could quiz their 10-15 friends whoâd run the maze before them about what to expect, but Becka would have no such benefit. The 16-20 crowd would run the maze tomorrow, and the 21-25 crowd would run it the day after that. There were no brackets above level 25 offered for the Luminous Maze.
